ibekk Solar PV (photovoltaic) panels are a smart, reliable way to generate free electricity
for your home or business – but how do they work?
The process is simpler than you might think.
Solar panels are made up of many solar cells, usually made from a material called silicon. When sunlight hits these cells, it causes a flow of electricity – this is known as the photovoltaic effect. It’s completely silent, clean and safe.
Even on cloudy days, solar panels still work – they don’t need direct sunlight, just daylight, sun radiation/photons that can penetrate cloud. You won’t generate as much electric as a clear sunny day. Solar panel will not work with thick storm and show cloud as well as snow covering.
The electricity generated by your solar panels is in direct current (DC) form, but the
appliances in your home use alternating current (AC). That’s where the inverter comes in.
The inverter converts the electricity into a usable form, so it can power your lighting, sockets, heating, and more.
Once converted, the electricity flows into your property and powers whatever is in use – from your fridge to your phone charger. Any electricity you generate but don’t use immediately is either sent back to the grid or stored in a battery (if you have one installed).
If your panels are producing more electricity than you need, and you don’t have battery storage, the excess is automatically exported to the National Grid.
