A Bit of Background – The Rise of Solar PV

Solar photovoltaic (PV) technology has come a long way since its invention in the 1950s. Originally developed to power satellites in space, it wasn’t until the 1990s and early 2000s that solar panels began making a real impact on homes and businesses here in the UK. Fast forward to today, and solar PV is now one of the most cost-effective and accessible renewable technologies on the market.

With energy prices at record highs and growing pressure to reduce carbon emissions, there’s never been a better time to go solar. At Ibekk, we’re proud to be part of this energy revolution, helping people across Oxfordshire and beyond generate clean, independent electricity from sunlight.

What is Solar PV?

Solar PV (photovoltaic) systems convert sunlight into electricity using panels typically installed on your roof. These panels work even on cloudy days and produce free, renewable electricity that can be used to power your home, business, or electric vehicle.

Solar panels with top tier brands such as Longi, Trina, Jinko, SolarEdge, REC all designed to work in lowlight conditions suited to the great British weather.

A complete system usually includes:

Solar panels

usually mounted on the roof, converting sunlight into DC electricity

Inverter

converts the DC electricity into usable AC electricity for your property

Generation meter

records how much electricity your system is generating

Optional battery storage

to store excess electricity for use later

Monitoring system

to track your system’s performance from anywhere

Our systems are designed to last 25-30+ years with minimal maintenance and can significantly cut your reliance on the National Grid.

The History of Solar PV – From Discovery to Modern-Day Homes

When you think of solar panels, you might picture a modern rooftop quietly generating electricity. But the journey of solar photovoltaic (PV) technology goes back much further than you might expect – almost 200 years.

Understanding where it all began helps us appreciate just how far this clean, renewable energy source has come.

1839
The Early Discovery

The story of solar PV begins in 1839, when a young French physicist named Alexandre Edmond Becquerel discovered what we now call the photovoltaic effect. At just 19 years old, he found that certain materials could produce an electric current when exposed to light.

This discovery was the scientific foundation for solar power, even though it would take over a century before it could be turned into something practical for everyday use.

1883
First Working Solar Cell

In 1883, American inventor Charles Fritts created the first working solar cell using selenium and a thin layer of gold. It only converted around 1% of sunlight into electricity, but it proved that light could be used to generate power without moving parts or fuel.

At the time, this was revolutionary though far too expensive and inefficient to use on a large scale.

1954
The Silicon Breakthrough

Solar PV took a massive leap forward in 1954 when Bell Labs in the United States developed the first practical silicon solar cell. These cells were much more efficient and began to open the possibility of real-world applications.

This was the moment when solar PV became more than just a scientific experiment – it was the start of its commercial journey.

1960s
Space Race and Satellites

In the 1960s, solar panels found a home in space. NASA and other space agencies used solar PV to power satellites and space missions, where reliability and energy independence were essential. It was during this time that investment in solar technology accelerated.

Although it was still expensive, these early space-based applications showed just how useful solar power could be.

1970s to 1990s
From Niche to Mainstream

Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, oil crises and growing awareness of environmental issues sparked interest in renewable energy. Governments and researchers began investing more into solar PV.

As production methods improved, the cost of solar panels began to drop, slowly making them more accessible to the public.

By the 1990s, solar panels were being used in off-grid homes, caravans, boats, and remote communications equipment.

2000s to Today
A New Era of Solar

From the early 2000s onwards, we entered a new phase of solar development. With government incentives, falling prices, and growing concern about climate change, solar PV became increasingly popular in homes and businesses across the world.

In the UK, the introduction of the Feed-in Tariff in 2010 encouraged tens of thousands of households to install solar panels. Although the scheme has since ended, it helped solar PV become mainstream.

Today, thanks to advancements in technology, materials, and installation methods, solar PV is more affordable, efficient, and widely available than ever before.

Solar Today – Clean, Smart and Scalable

Modern solar panels are sleek, highly efficient, and often paired with battery storage systems and EV charging points. Homeowners can now generate, store, and use their own electricity, cutting bills and reducing reliance on the grid.

At IBEKK, we install these systems for homes and businesses across Oxford and surrounding areas. We’re proud to be part of this ongoing evolution – helping people reduce their carbon footprint and take control of their energy future

Why the History of Solar Matters

The journey of solar PV shows how innovation, investment, and environmental awareness can lead to lasting change. What began as a 19th-century scientific discovery is now a key part of the UK’s push for net zero and a practical, cost-effective choice for households today.
